In 2017, with your help, we defeated not one but two toxic nominees that President Trump hand-picked. Calls from UCS supporters helped convince senators to oppose these anti-science players.
Now, with your help, we can defeat another: Kathleen Hartnett-White, President Trump’s nominee to lead the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). When Congress asked her about where she stands on the issues, Hartnett-White not only denied climate change—she plagiarized her responses! We deserve better.
The CEQ plays a critical role in protecting and promoting the quality of our environment, including by developing and recommending national policies to foster and promote environmental protection. Hartnett-White, however, has built her career prioritizing the interests of fossil fuel companies over the public interest. She must be defeated!
Call your Senators today at 866-580-8532
and ask them to oppose the confirmation of Kathleen Hartnett-White! When you call, you will hear a message from UCS with short talking points that you can use to show your opposition to Hartnett-White. We’ve also provided a sample call script, below, to support you.
Imagine this. If Hartnett-White were confirmed, America’s top environmental advisor would be someone who has called carbon dioxide the “gas of life” and said that belief in global warming is a “kind of paganism.” If confirmed, our top environmental advisor would also be someone who said that carbon dioxide “has none of the characteristics of a pollutant that could harm human health” and that ozone isn’t harmful “unless you put your mouth over the tailpipe of a car for eight hours a day.” It would be someone who has said, repeatedly, that fossil fuels ended slavery.
It’s not just what Hartnett-White has said that is so egregious. It’s what she’s done. At the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, where Hartnett-White previously worked, she put industry preferences ahead of public health—pushing for a lax ozone standard, approving pollution-intensive coal plants, and lowballing fines for companies that violate state laws. Her work at the Texas Public Policy Foundation is funded by fossil fuel companies, creating potential conflicts of interest for her future work at CEQ.
Hartnett-White is so unqualified, in fact, that she actually plagiarized answers to written questions to Congress.
Call 866-580-8532 to speak with your Senators today. After you speak to one senator, you can dial 866-580-8532 a second time to be connected to your other senator and ensure both of your Senators are hearing that their constituents loudly oppose this unqualified nominee!
