January 15th, over a hundred people marched from Bethel A Baptist Church to the Porter Center at Brevard College in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. It was cold out but plenty showed up to walk together. The police were wonderful and provided safety for the marchers.
Once in the Porter Center, participants were able to view art by Billy Smith and enjoy a program that shared some of the “I have a dream speech”, music by local groups and words of unity.
We attended the march last year and personally, I felt a sadness this year I didn’t detect last year. A sadness that to me is tied to words of Donald Trump and those who support him either openly or through their silence.
The speeches and songs focused on hope and light. That is how this community is. Because of that, I know we are rising above. We have a dream…
