Domestic violence is a serious issue in the US and North Carolina.

Every 9 seconds in the US, a woman is assaulted or beaten. Intimate partner violence accounts for 15% of all violent crime. 19% of domestic violence involves a weapon. 72% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner. 94% of the victims of these murder-suicides are female. These numbers are even higher in rural areas.

Acts of domestic violence go largely unreported because the victims are afraid of violent retaliation from their partners. Victims of domestic violence should be heard without fear for their or their loved one’s lives.

NC NOW (National Organization for Women), SAFE Transylvania, and Progress NC have come together to bring community awareness to this very real problem.

Join us in the Scott Commons building for a 90 minute town hall where area experts will discuss the challenges of domestic violence and sexual violence for victims in rural areas and ways to increase support and protection of these victims.
