Like most topics we tackle, this is a tough one; it’s broad and nuanced, full of myths and fallacies that evoke emotional responses for a lot of folks. This kit will tell you about the recent history of immigration in the U.S., and explain the different types of immigration programs, including DACA and Dreamers. You’ll learn about the differences between asylum-seekers and refugees, sanctuary cities and ICE, and find resources for immigration concerns and ways you can help. Those are the nuts and bolts in the kit, but it doesn’t tell you why we decided to spend a month on the topic. We wanted to share what makes this a compelling issue, and that is the idea of sanctuary.

Sanctuary really is an idea central to the formation of the United States, but an inviolate idea common to all people. Hospitals, mosques, temples, churches, synagogues, cemeteries, homeless shelters, schools – all are supposed to be safe places of refuge, and to violate the principles of a nation of immigrants or the sanctity of a sanctuary, is a violation of our own humanity. We’ve seen too many of these violations. ICE raids in a homeless shelter. Swastikas painted on Jewish graves. School shootings. Parents forcefully separated from their children. Sanctuary cities made illegal. There is no magic in a building, and no protection spell bestowed by God, no matter how sacred the cathedral or hospital. What makes a place sacred is the power we humans place upon it through the strength of our beliefs and actions. It could be a teepee, an oasis in a desert, any place where we say, “No. No evil shall pass here.” In violating that and our principles, we take away our own power.

But we are not powerless. When a “Muslim immigration ban” was introduced, we flocked to the airports. When families are being callously deported, our religious institutions have given them sanctuary. When a “registry” was proposed, millions of us pledged to identify ourselves with the oppressed to hide them.
