I just finished the book Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance.  The book hit me hard.  It made a lot of sense to me who grew up with a father from the coal mines of West Virginia.

I don’t agree with his conclusion for “our people” though and I do believe government can help.  The very things he claimed helped him are not available to everyone, as he states.  Isn’t that where we can all come together and make a difference.  The answer is yes.  Sometimes that outreach requires resources those who want to help do not have.  That is where outside help comes in.

While J.D. and I came from similar backgrounds and we both “broke out” I think he does us all a disservice when he claims what will and won’t work.  Solutions are as individual as the community.

I recommend the book but keep an open mind.  Honor his thoughts and words but it is one voice of many of us.  And this voice does not agree with his views on the fix.

Thanks to Mr. Vance for sharing his story.
