Tariffs Imperil a Hometown Business in South Carolina: BMW

The Spartanburg plant is BMW’s biggest in the world. It has helped draw more than 200 companies from two dozen countries to Spartanburg County. And the German company — not an American icon like Ford or General Motors — is now the largest exporter of cars made in the United States, turning the port of Charleston, S.C., into a hub for global trade. But by setting off a global trade battle, President Trump is threatening the town’s livelihood. People aren’t happy.

Trump wanted to cut arts funding. Instead, the spending bill he signed gives it a boost.

WE NEED THE ARTS NOW MORE THAN EVER
President Trump has shown he has a very particular dislike of criticism and dissent. He has repeatedly belittled his critics — and, accusers — while failing to answer their criticisms. His administration has, similarly, taken to hiding behind accusations of fake news in order to delegitimize his critics. Trump is, in a very real sense, the worst qualities of the classic internet critic distilled into presidential form.

The arts offer a means of countering this with the very best of what our connectedness can bring: elevating minority voices, fostering outsider thinking, providing careful deliberation of difficult subjects, and, perhaps most important in these divisive times, the arts allow us to meditate on the basic truths of our lives today.

British Protest Trump with Loud Visuals

President Donald Trump said he felt “unwelcome” in London after the city’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, allowed a 19-foot-tall “Trump Baby” blimp to fly over the Houses of Parliament.
“I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London,” Trump said in an interview with The Sun. “I used to love London as a city. I haven’t been there in a long time. But when they make you feel unwelcome, why would I stay there?”

The Way Trump and the GOP Deal With Russian Attacks Is ‘Textbook Treason’

David Rothkopf, CEO and Editor of Foreign Policy Magazine, takes the gloves off and puts a good old fashioned beat-down on the GOP in this powerful piece for The Daily Beast. “To attack one of our national defense leaders [Rosenstein] as we are being attacked, and to do so to benefit our foreign adversary, is textbook treason.”

“That is strong language. But consider this: If we updated our definitions of war to include cyberwar, then aiding a foreign power engaged in such a war against us would certainly meet the Constitutional definition: ‘Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort.’”

WHITE HOUSE THREATENED TO ECONOMICALLY CRIPPLE ECUADOR FOR PROMOTING BREASTFEEDING

Though a 2016 study found that breastfeeding would prevent 800,000 child deaths a year worldwide and save $300 billion from reduced health-care costs for children given breast milk, the $70 billion baby-food industry, dominated by a handful of American and European companies, “has seen sales flatten in wealthy countries in recent years, as more women embrace breastfeeding,” per the Times. And the White House obviously can’t have that!

Vote against the GOP this November

Consider the melancholy example of House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (Wis.), who wagered his dignity on the patently false proposition that it is possible to have sustained transactions with today’s president, this Vesuvius of mendacities, without being degraded. In Robert Bolt’s play “A Man for All Seasons,” Thomas More, having angered Henry VIII, is on trial for his life. When Richard Rich, whom More had once mentored, commits perjury against More in exchange for the office of attorney general for Wales, More says: “Why, Richard, it profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world . . . But for Wales!” Ryan traded his political soul for . . . a tax cut. He who formerly spoke truths about the accelerating crisis of the entitlement system lost everything in the service of a president pledged to preserve the unsustainable status quo.

Trump Administration Withdraws U.S. From U.N. Human Rights Council

To remain as a member of any “Human Rights Council” would be the height of hypocrisy. The United States’ (yes, it’s on all of us) treatment of children at our southern border is a most grotesque violation of human rights. The decision to withdraw from the Human Rights Council is deliberately timed to minimize pushback while we are all focused on the atrocity perpetrated by the Department of Homeland Security. That our attention is elsewhere is as it should be, but does not diminsh the insanity of this move.

AC-T OPINION | Beware the slashers at the NC voting booth

It’s as if the Republican leadership has been so intent on restricting access to the ballot for so long, they just cannot stop. Like zombies they move forward, making it harder for people to vote, this time by senselessly killing off some of the most used early voting hours, in addition to efforts to revive voter ID and gerrymander the judiciary.

Every Action Has an Equal and Opposite Reaction- It’s Time to Stand Up and Be the Reaction

It is time we accepted that the President of the United States is a demonstrated pathological narcissist and liar with no regard for consequence. According to Eric Boehlert, Trump is devoid of empathy and lacks a soul or a heart.  He is filled with a deep emptiness driven by sociopathic paranoia, grandiosity and cruelty.  This man embodies the definition of a sociopath.

The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival will necessarily be a multi-year undertaking. The Summer of 2017 through the Spring of 2018 will be used as the public launching of the Campaign. By engaging in highly publicized civil disobedience and direct action over a 6-week period in at least 25 states and the District of Columbia during the Spring of 2018, the Campaign will force a serious national examination of the enmeshed evils of systemic racism, poverty, militarism and environmental devastation during a key election year while strengthening and connecting informed and committed grassroots leadership in every state, increasing their power to continue this fight long after June 2018.
