Washington Post: Senate Report Details Vast Russian Meddling Campaign

The heads of the research groups that prepared the report, Oxford Internet Institute director Phil Howard and Graphika’s CEO John W. Kelly, both testified to the Senate Intelligence Committee on August 1 about what their initial work revealed concerning the extent of Russian influence on U.S. elections via social media.

Kelly also told MSNBC that the release of data by Twitter, Facebook, and Google clearly implicated Russia’s Internet Research Agency — which he described as a “contract shop” originally set up for “conditioning the Russian public” before, “at some point, they got the contract to boot up their American influence operations.”

Trump Will Have Blood on His Hands

Donald Trump’s more sophisticated defenders have long since mastered the art of pretending that the only thing that matters with his presidency is what it does, not what he says. But not all of the president’s defenders are quite as sophisticated. Some of them didn’t get the memo about taking Trump seriously but not literally. A few hear the phrase “enemy of the people” and are prepared to take the words to their logical conclusion. We are approaching a day when blood on the newsroom floor will be blood on the president’s hands.

We have the first documented case of Russian hacking in the 2018 election

Microsoft had already announced that Russian hackers had gone after “three candidates” in the 2018 election, but hadn’t revealed who they were. Identifying McCaskill specifically as a target is incredibly revealing: She’s only up on her Republican opponent by one point in the RealClearPolitics average. If Democrats lose her seat, they face a very tough road to win back the Senate in November. Helping Republicans defeat McCaskill (or another Democratic senator in a Trump-voting state) would be perhaps the single biggest boost that Russia could give to the GOP — and, by extension, to President Trump.
