Can Jim Mattis Hold the Line in Trump’s ‘War Cabinet’?

Dismissed as a warmonger during the Obama presidency, the defense secretary may be the only reliable voice of caution left in an administration inching closer to the brink. Relying on the reputation of generals to win over Congress or the public “sets up military leaders as the guarantors of public support, something that should be anathema to the longstanding balance of civil-military roles in America,” Mattis and a colleague wrote in an essay published in 2016.

Tell Your Senators: End Our Unauthorized War in Yemen

This doesn’t happen very often—the Senate will soon debate and vote on an American war. Specifically, it will take up a bipartisan resolution (S.J.Res. 54) to end U.S. participation in the Yemen civil war.

This is a big deal. The United States’ role in the Yemen war is complicated and controversial. Importantly, it also hasn’t been authorized by Congress.

For too long, Congress has ceded its war powers to the executive branch. That’s always been a dangerous trend—but it’s especially perilous now that Donald Trump is the commander-in-chief.

There’s a lot at stake here. Here’s what you need to know.

US forces reportedly killed more than 100 Russian mercenaries inside Syria

Aleksandr Ionov, a Russian businessman working in Syria offering security and other services, said he estimated after conversations with associates in several private military organizations that more than 200 Russians might have been killed.
Mr. Ionov said not all those killed were Russian: Some of the paid fighters came from other countries that were once part of the Soviet Union. “More than 200 is the current estimate, we cannot know the exact number yet, but most of them were Russian,” he said in a telephone interview.

Russia-Trump inquiry: Full text of Mueller’s indictment

The US has charged 13 Russian nationals and three Russian firms for meddling in the US 2016 election. Herein is the full text of the indictment, which was announced by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team. It doesn’t actually read like a Clancy novel, but is just as fascinating. Too bad everyone won’t read this. Surely even the most conservative of us would be appalled.

House Intelligence Committee Minority Response to Release of Chairman Nunes’ Misleading Memo

“It is telling that Chairman Nunes put out this memo without bothering to read the underlying materials, and that he ordered changes to the document without informing his own committee members. It is a terrible lapse in leadership that Speaker Ryan failed to intervene and prevent the abuse of classified materials in this way. It is tragic, if all too predictable, that this President would allow the release of the memo despite FBI and DOJ’s expressions of ‘grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the [Republicans’] memo’s accuracy’.
