In ‘complete victory’ for Los Angeles, judge rules DOJ can’t tie funding to cooperation with ICE

Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III is hell-bent on rigging the immigration courts against immigrants and due process, but in the courtrooms out of his clutches, he continues to lose:

A federal judge in Los Angeles ruled this week that the U.S. Department of Justice cannot withhold public safety, policing grants in so-called “sanctuary cities” where local law enforcement officials can choose not to turn over suspected undocumented immigrants in custody over to federal immigration authorities.

Sign and send the petition to Congress: Congress has the power to save the census.

This is another chapter in the racially based playbook for the Republican game of permanent majority, minority oppression, and ethnic cleansing versus fair voting, one vote-one voice, and participation in government of the people, by the people and for the people. It is an affront to the principles of representative Democracy and a moral disgrace, no matter what rationale you hide it behind.

IMMIGRATION TOOLKIT

Sanctuary really is an idea central to the formation of the United States, but an inviolate idea common to all people. Hospitals, mosques, temples, churches, synagogues, cemeteries, homeless shelters, schools – all are supposed to be safe places of refuge, and to violate the principles of a nation of immigrants or the sanctity of a sanctuary, is a violation of our own humanity.

Campaign CALL TO ACTION- Add your name: Immigrant youth can’t wait. Pass the Dream Act NOW.

On December 22, sixty-six senators, including 17 Democrats, voted to pass the year-end spending bill without the inclusion of legislative protection for undocumented youth. By voting for a spending bill without the Dream Act, our political leaders BROKE YET ANOTHER PROMISE and voted for the deportation of immigrant youth.

ICE spokesman resigns, citing fabrications by agency chief and Sessions about California immigrant arrests

Sessions, Homan and President Trump sharply criticized Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf (D) for issuing a public warning in late February about an imminent ICE raid throughout the region. At the time, Schaaf said she wanted to protect “law-abiding” immigrants from “the constant threat of arrest and deportation.”

Schwab also criticized the mayor’s warning as “misguided,” but he told Fox affiliate KTVUafter resigning that ICE ended up capturing 232 suspected undocumented immigrants — even more than officials had originally expected. About half of the people picked up had felonies or misdemeanors on their records, officials say.

In the raid’s aftermath, officials in Washington had repeatedly suggested that hundreds of criminals had escaped because of the mayor’s actions.

SCOTUS: DACA Recipients Can Stay for Now

KNOCKING AWAY A cornerstone of President Donald Trump’s immigration plan, the Supreme Court on Monday rejected the president’s request to go forward with the deportation of children brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents.

After at least two days of deliberation, the high court refused to overturn a lower-court ruling which stops Trump from repealing Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – an Obama-era federal program allowing those children and young adults to legally stay in the country under certain conditions.

By denying the request for an emergency ruling, the justices likely have kept Trump from meeting next week’s deadline to begin deporting DACA recipients, whose fates now hinge on the twin lawsuits civil rights advocates filed after the president announced he would undo DACA. The high court also gave the young people a big reprieve of sorts: It could take between several months and as long as a year for the court cases to be resolved.

Mark Meadows’ Immigration Update

Transylvania Indivisible makes an effort to maintain a non-partisan stance, but I cannot allow this position to pass without comment. Mr. Meadows’ contention that he is fulfilling a promise made and based on the the wishes of the American people is made lie by the actual feelings of the American people, as reported by The Hill on January 14 this year: “The CBS News poll, released Sunday, shows 70 percent of Americans favor allowing those who benefit from the program, often known as “Dreamers,” to stay in the country.”

Mr. Meadows, like most politicians, is addicted to telling us, the people, how we feel. My wife taught me doing so is a losing proposition with no relationship to reality and no possible good outcome. The same can be said of Mr. Meadows’ posturing. He expresses his own feelings about brown people and their families from our southern border, and passes them off as a reflection of the American public. I call BS.

Brevard College SGA is calling for students, teachers, school administrators, parents and allies to take part in a#NationalSchoolWalkout for 17 minutes at 10am across every time zone on March 14, 2018 to protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods. We need action.

Students and allies are organizing the national school walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship. Students and staff have the right to teach and learn in an environment free from the worry of being gunned down in their classrooms or on their way home from school. Parents have the right to send their kids to school in the mornings and see them home alive at the end of the day. We are not safe at school. We are not safe in our cities and towns.

Congress must take meaningful action to keep us safe and pass federal gun reform legislation that address the public health crisis of gun violence. We want Congress to pay attention and take note: many of us will vote this November and many others will join in 2020. Join us in saying #ENOUGH!
