Antarctica’s ice is shrinking at an unprecedented rate that could imperil coastal regions worldwide

The Antarctic ice sheet lost nearly 3 trillion metric tons of ice from 1992 to 2017, and its rate of loss over that time tripled in West Antarctica, according to an international collaboration involving about 80 scientists.

The finding, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, reveals that the continent’s ice is shrinking at an unprecedented rate and could mean an even higher sea level rise by 2100. That would have serious implications for the environment and for people living in coastal regions around the world.

Scott Pruitt’s Dirty Politics

In June, Pruitt joined Trump in the White House Rose Garden as Trump announced that the United States was withdrawing from the Paris climate accord. Although there is a consensus among scientists that human activity is causing climate change, Pruitt is skeptical of this view; unlike Trump, who has called global warming a “hoax” created by the Chinese, Pruitt expresses his dissent with deliberate mildness. Last March, he told CNBC, “Measuring with precision human activity on the climate is something very challenging to do.” He went on, “I would not agree that it’s a primary contributor to the global warming that we see. But we don’t know that yet. We need to continue to debate, continue the review and analysis.” The E.P.A., he has said, will commence a “red team–blue team” review of climate-change science that puts “experts in a room and lets them debate.”

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt pushing his own “Censoring Science Rule.”

In one of his most outrageous moves yet, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt is pushing a proposal to grant himself the power to censor science — including research that demonstrates the harmful impacts that his big polluter allies have on our clean air and water, our land, our wildlife, and our climate. This insidious proposal would give him — and only him — the authority to determine which scientific findings would be used to set new health and environmental standards at the EPA — and which would be completely ignored.
