NC lawmakers may hold special session to write ballot wording for amendments

Senate Democratic Leader Dan Blue said Republicans are trying to tip the constitutional balance of power in the legislature’s favor.

“Republicans are serving their own interests, not the people’s interest,” he said.

“It’s trying to take all of the power from the people, that the people have given to their government, and arrogate it to the legislative branch of government. I don’t care if there are Democrats in the majority or Republicans in the majority, that cuts very strongly against the basic structure and the core of the government in this state.”

The numbers prove our government has been taken over by a tyrannical minority—but there is hope

This is how you end up with a nearly all-white, all-male minority party in control of the government, despite an increasingly diverse electorate overall. The current system gives wildly disproportionate power to rural, mostly white states across the middle of the country at the expense of all states with major populations of people of color. This is the broken system that allowed Mitch McConnell to remain in power. It allowed Mitch McConnell and his coup conspirators to steal a Supreme Court seat, securing a conservative wing of the court that will damage this country for generations. The rest is going to be up to you, dear readers. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. It is up to each of us to get involved in ways large and small. Find a candidate and donate your time and your money. Phone back, donate, fundraise, register voters, knock on doors, put out those yard signs. Take it all back and then let’s fix this broken system, starting with throwing the Electoral College in the trash where it belongs.

AC-T OPINION | Beware the slashers at the NC voting booth

It’s as if the Republican leadership has been so intent on restricting access to the ballot for so long, they just cannot stop. Supreme Court Upholds Controversial Ohio Voter-Purge Law

“This ruling emboldens Republicans in states across the country in their efforts to remove millions from their rolls simply for not voting,” the DNC said. “Make no mistake: this case was about nothing more than Ohio Republicans trying to tilt elections in their favor by blocking communities of color from the ballot box — all under the guise of preventing ‘voter fraud.'”

“Fair Courts, Fair Votes” Month of Action (May 18-June 18). 6 Ways You Can Stop the Next Attacks on Our Democracy – Step One

North Carolina’s District and Superior Court Judges are elected by voters in judicial districts. A plan to redraw these districts (House Bill 717), sponsored by bail bondsman Rep. Justin Burr, who was just defeated in the recent primary election and will not return in January 2019, can be taken up at any time during the the current 2018 short session. HB717 is being roundly criticized by judges, the legal community, and the public as part of a broader attack on the courts in 2017.* In December, Republican Senate leaders proposed their own plan to redraw judicial districts, which is also being criticized for how it was introduced and what it does.
Right now, the legislature is back in session and is taking your input on these and other bold legislative changes to how judges are selected. It’s time to make our voices heard!

As part of their sham process to rig our system for their control, the same lawmakers who are leading attacks on our courts are also planning to push new voting restrictions during the short session. It’s time to tell them to stop all of the schemes against us.
